Reward credit cards are products for those who use credit cards on a regular basis and want to achieve savings. Rewards cards allow you to earn cash back and get other perks and benefits.
A reward can be in a form of a direct cashback but most banks have adopted a point system - a customer is awarded points for every purchase made. These points can be than redeemed for goods and services, as travel, gift cards and entertainment rewards. You can even pay your mortgage rate by simply making everyday purchases using your credit card.
It is estimated that about 40-55% of all credit cards are linked to a reward program. The rewards vary between cards. The examples are: cash back when you shop online at select merchants, cashback bonus in categories like travel, gas, groceries, restaurants, home improvement stores, gift cards, concierge services and others.
Most of rewards credit cards do not charge annual membership fee. Many card issuers also offer 0% or low rate introductory APR.
When looking for a reward credit card it is worth to check if you can redeem your points in increments, if there is a limit of points you can earn, if the cashback is received automatically or you should redeem the points for rewards, when/if the reward expires and if the bank charges annual fee.
Reward cards are only worth to apply for if you pay your monthly balance every month in full as they usually have higher APR than other type of cards.
